Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
